The complexity of managing and monitoring educational campuses

The educational sector is often characterized by large campuses. In the ideal scenario, these campuses consist of buildings that are in close proximity with each other. However, for most historical high schools and universities, the number of buildings has  grown organically over the years, sometimes even over centuries, in and around large cities. This begs the question: "how can an educational organization monitor and manage all safety, security and buildings systems of their campuses, even when the systems are older and of different types and vendors?"

In most cases this wide range of different types of systems results to a control room or a technical space in which operators need to be able to work with many different interfaces and software packages. They need to have knowledge and or training for each and every one of the software packages.

The number one priority: managing safety and security

There is a lot of human traffic with the many buildings and services provided by educational institutions. On most weekdays every building will be used by different groups of students, teachers, directors, technical staff and so on. With Sky-Walker, the nightmare of guaranteeing public safety for each and everyone of the stakeholders becomes an easy task. Sky-Walker enables the operators in the technical space or the control room to monitor the multi-site campuses easily and intuitively. The main advantage is the fact that operators only need to know how to use Sky-Walker, instead of the large number of different interfaces and software packages that came with the clutter of different systems.

The added value of Sky-Walker in a crisis situation

The pre-determined workflows enable the operators to handle every safety incident quickly and efficiently. When for an example a fire alarm is triggered in a building the operator is not familiar with, his or hers situational awareness is immediately raised by automatically switching to the cameras of the incident's location. The flight routes are shown and the contact details of the local police and fire station are shown as well. This way, using the intercom and access control systems, the operators are able to turn an otherwise stressful situation into a calm and efficient workflow. Afterwards, management staff (or even the fire department) is able to generate an in-detail report about the incident.

Focus on comfort

Facility managers can use Sky-Walker to make the daily life on campus more comfortable for visitors, but also to reduce energy costs and save time. For instance: when people forget to turn of lights, heating, windows and so, when they leave a room, energy is spilled. If it happens sometimes, in one building, it's not that big of a deal. However, in large multi-site and even multi-city campuses it can grow to a rather large waste of sources. With Sky-Walker you can not only double-check if in an empty room is ‘turned off’, but you can also control the heating, lighting etc. from a remote desktop where in the past you had to check everything manually. All these actions can also be linked to an automatic timer, based on a time schedule.

In recent years, the focus has also turned into energy meters, especially on large campuses. Heating and/or HVAC installations can be monitored and controlled from within Sky-Walker. The right analysis can be made thanks to the reports you get from the system. This can sharpen your view on security, energy and general comfort and help you focus on the future.

Choose for synergy instead of inefficiency

With many systems, comes a lot of inefficiency. Most building, safety and security systems operate separately, instead us using their combined force. Luckily, this problem belongs to the past when using our open integration platform Sky-Walker. Our software platform is capable of integrating all subsystems from different vendors into one, intuitive and completely customizable user interface. Most of the subsystems in buildings and campuses can be grouped under our 3 areas of expertise: comfort, safety and security management. The result? Operators no longer need to have knowledge of all these interfaces and need only be trained in one, Sky-Walker. In cases of emergency, the response times are faster and the evacuations times shorter, which benefits a sector characterized by large groups of people a lot.

Our solution is built on your existing infrastructure

In summary, the use of Sky-Walker can benefit the educational sector in more ways than can even be written down here. The opportunities are endless. A comfortable, safe and secure environment in educational buildings and campuses does not need to be something of the future. The Sky-Walker platform will connect to all existing and future systems, resulting in a truly smart solution.
